Speaking with Morçego (Anderson Da Silva) we asked about the effectiveness of Capoera in a real fight. He told us about the nasty rodas that happen often in Brazil, nothing to do with the peaceful demonstration we’re used to see around.
We took this opportunity and asked him to show us examples of fighting techniques and some “dirty” moves (that are not allowed but happen in real Capoeira fights).

Good morning, my name is Anderson Da Silva also known as “o Morçego”.
I play Capoeira since I was 3 years old
I began with my dad, he used to call me “Macaquiña” (little monkey)
I started long ago and now I can do what I can do…
…thanks to God and because of a lot of sacrifice.
Now I’d like to show you the meaning of Capoeira
because very often people think that Capoeira is a dance, but in reality it isn’t
it is a way of misleading the opponent with a dance but at the end
is a great combat art, a great way of fighting
I’d like to show you some techniques
From the ginga… this for example is called “martello” (hammer)
let’s see some other movements… “martello di coscia”…
“pontero” (nail) between the legs
open hand left and right; joelhada (knee smash), godeimi (elbow strike),
rasteira (sweep)
we’ve seen the “martello” as a damaging technique
if it is very well applied you can send to the hospital your opponent
we’ve also seen “martello” exteral and internal to the thigh
then “pontero”, which is also very dangerous
and “rasteira” which is an unbalancing technique
moreover in Capoeira there are also some “dirty” techniques that shouldn’t be done
such as putting a finger in the eyes, biting, hit genitals, and much more.
